More About The Data

The data mapped here come from the SIFP database. This statistical database itself is based on census data, which have been corrected by cross-checking between census data on floppies and district census handbooks. The raw data have been used to compute indexes, which are presented below.

Construction of the indexes

AGRICULTURE

Agricultural intensity is the number of agriculture workers (cultivators and agricultural labourers) per cultivated hectare.

Cultivators is the percentage of cultivators in the agricultural workforce (cultivators and agricultural labourers). Farmers are considered "cultivators" if more than 180 days of work per year are spent for cultivating their own land, unlike "agricultural labourers" who are employed as salaried workers for more than 180 days.

Irrigation is the percentage of cultivated areas which are irrigated. It does'nt inform us about the intensity of the irrigation, i.e. the number of irrigated cultures per year, knowing for example that an irrigation by tubewell makes it more possible to get rid of the climatic constraints than an irrigation by tank.

Forest is the percentage of land use classified "reserved forest" by the census.
