Cities
are town of more than 100.000 inhabitants. According to 1991
census, there was 94 cities in South India, including 7 with
more than 1 million inhabitants. Chennai (formerly Madras),
capital of Tamil Nadu, is the bigger one, with more than 6 millions
inhabitants, followed by Bangalore, and Hyderabad. The four
other "million plus cities" just have around one million
inhabitants.
The
repartition of the cities follows mainly the ditribution of
the south indian population. The South (Kerala and south of
Tamil Nadu) has a lot of cities, and you can find some other
clusters in the deltas of Andhra Pradesh. In the region where
population is less dense (North if Karnataka, centre of Andhra
Pradesh, around Tiruvanamalai in Tamil Nadu), you find isolated
cities, which are smaller than the southern one.
