Some of the major steps of the SIFP are briefly summed up here.

Phase 1(1999-2001

Statistical data acquisition

Preparation of the statistical database for South India from Census files (about 240 separate files).

Regional demographic analysis.

Analysis of demographic trends in each state of South India from the SRS, Census, NFHS etc. Lead to the preparation of the first book (see table of contents).

GIS preparation

The largest task of all: digitization and georeferencing of 75000 villages and town in South India (methodology described in PPSS).

Spatial analysis

Preparation of maps of fertility differentials in 1991 from the GIS.

Phase 2 (2002-2003)

Book finalization

A book was prepared based on results from Phase 1 of the project. Other colleagues offered additional materials on historical, spatial and local trends of fertility transition. Book to be published soon (hopefully) by Sage. More on the book.

Research design for village survey

Identification of 10 village sites in South India according to their location, stage in fertility transition and copulation composition. Design of a new methodology for a qualitative village survey. See Phase 2

Fieldwork

Fieldwork carried over six months in selected villages.

Co-ordination meetings

Regular meetings held in 2002 in Coimbatore, Bangalore, Tirupati and Thiruvananthapuram.

Final reports
Final reports were prepared in 2003. A new book is also envisioned based on results from the fieldwork operations.
