South Indian Population Information System

|  |  What is SIPIS ?  | |
SIPIS is a CD-ROM (published by the French Institute of Pondicherry) that includes a database along with a mapping software. It is a user-friendly population and infrastructure database of villages and towns in South India which can be easily visualized through maps.

With the help of a customized software included in this CD, you will be able to explore the region at different scales of analysis ( districts, taluks, villages, towns). You may also consult and map out data of your choice, as well as save and print maps. Available data include population and other socio-economic statistics, health and education infrastructures, communication and transportation facilities, as well as maps of land use, elevation or irrigation.

No. SIPIS covers only South Indian States and will comprise four volumes (Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala). The first SIPIS volume available is for Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Here is a typical screen that you will see on your computer while using SIPIS. It includes menus on the top, a legend bar on the left, the main map in the middle and more information below (a scale bar and map tip option). This screen includes a map of taluk divisions in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. More detailed screens are displayed in A sample of SIPIS maps.

Good luck with Windows 2000 and XP!

However, you can't use SIPIS any more. So the only thing you can do is to load the original files that are in "SHP" format and map/display them with ArcExplorer (a free GIS brower)

Download SIPIS (as zipped files) :

Download and install ArcEplorer from this site:

SIPIS has been developed in the course of the South India Fertility Project (see Authors and credits).
