Raw statistical data from the 1991 Census are copyrighted  from the Census of India. Other variables (ratios, percentages, etc.) have been computed by the SIFP. The full description of the data is accessible from the CD.
Some village data have been already published in the corresponding District Census Handbook volumes. They can also be purchased on floppy disks.
More data than used here are also available from the Census of India publications. We suggest interested users to consult the state-wise District Profile 1991 volumes for more data (nuptiality, child mortality, education, work participation, migration, religion, language, housing and population trends), as well as other census volumes. These data are, however, available only at the district and town level.
For details , see the web site of the Census of India:  http://www.censusofindia.net
We have used a variety of published maps to locate villages and other geographical features.
Data are not georeferenced, but distances are respected. Census villages are usually revenue villages. These villages may comprise several hamlets, but are treated as a single statistical unit. The village database also includes a large number of uninhabited areas (such as Reserve Forest or Protected Forests).
We have detected many inaccuracies or discrepancies in the original data, which have been corrected whenever possible. Village areas have not been reproduced.

We have smoothed raw data using the kriging method (a standard geostatistical estimation technique). The size of each coloured cell (pixel) is approximately 500 m.
Fertility values refer to the child-woman ratio.
